Selling the Crystal

The Crystal is one of the world’s most sustainable event venues and is home to the world's largest exhibition focused on urban sustainability and a world-class center for dialogue, discovery and learning. 


Owned and operated by Siemens, the Crystal Operations team are seeking a talented sales executive to sell this unique event space.

Event Magazine’s Careers Content Editor, Antje Derks talked to Josh Palmer, Operations Manager at The Crystal to find out more about this modern icon and the role on offer.

What is The Crystal?

The Crystal is a stand-alone event space and one of the world’s greenest buildings - achieving the highest ratings in BREEAM and LEED accreditation schemes- the most stringent standards for sustainable design and construction, and ISO20121 – the International Standard for event management. 

The uniquely shaped, glass-clad structure is London’s newest landmark and encompasses an area of more than 6,300 square metres.  The Crystal demonstrates first-hand the remarkable systems and technologies that are employed to reduce its carbon footprint and ensure its environmental credentials over the long term.

The Crystal is an all-electric building that uses solar power and a ground source heat pumps to generate its own energy. That means no fossil fuels are burnt within the building. The Crystal showcases state-of-the-art technologies to make buildings more efficient and also profiles Siemens’ environmental portfolio.


With 17 unique event spaces, the Crystal has hosted a wide variety of events, including global car launches, international conferences and high profile announcements, whilst also offering private meeting spaces for small groups.

The Crystal is located right on the river Thames at the Royal Dock, with the Emirates Cable Car to the East and Canary Wharf to the West, and offers a striking contrast to the surrounding skyline.

What happens at The Crystal?

The Crystal hosts meetings, events and conferences both on behalf of Siemens and for external clients.   Existing clients include UK government, Tesla motors, BMW and Google, amongst over 400 events held since opening in Sept 2012.

The exhibition is a key attractor for event customers, with over 60 interactive exhibition which explain sustainability concepts and inspire visitors to be more sustainable.  In two years a staggering 200,000 people have visited and the exhibition has received a number of certifications and awards, including Green Tourism Gold and ‘Best exhibition’ at the AV awards.  


Whilst sustainability is a big draw for clients, the cutting edge design, iconic location and state-of –the-art technology make the Crystal an incredibly attractive proposition in the competitive London venue industry.

Tell me more about the sales executive role you are looking to fill

This is a unique role within an ambitious yet fun Operations team; we are looking for an exceptional candidate who can bring experience of working in the London events scene. Ideally they are pro-active, tenacious, passionate about sustainability and proud to be part of team Crystal.

This person should be a strong communicator, be it leading with a cold call, meeting new clients and customers and growing and expanding our existing client base.

We anticipate the Sales Executive will lead on all proactive sales, identifying new clients and approaching them with well thought out and executed sales pitches.  From this point our in-house accounts team will conclude the contract and then hand over to our events team who will take over the event design and delivery.

What is the culture and working environment like at The Crystal?

The Crystal is unique environment, from our influx of external visitors of all ages, to people dropping by the café to Global meetings with city leaders, the building literally exudes energy. The role forms part of our Operations team, comprising of around 60 that manage all aspects of the Crystal operation. We are a hard working, and social team.
