The Association for Financial Markets in Europe (AFME) represents a broad array of European and global participants in the wholesale financial markets. Its members comprise pan-EU and global banks as well as key regional banks, brokers, law firms, investors and other financial market participants. We advocate stable, competitive, sustainable European financial markets that support economic growth and benefit society.

Our busy Events Department plays a key role, organising a programme of events that bring together our members, other parts of the industry, politicians, regulators and the media to discuss the issues and to share their views. The department currently organises more than 20 large and medium scale events each year, in London and other European cities such as Brussels, Berlin and Madrid.

AFME are looking for a highly motivated self-starter who is hardworking, intelligent, with a minimum of five years’ experience working in business development or events relationship to join the Events team. The role requires the successful candidate to create and deliver sales, business development and marketing engagement strategies that will successfully deliver increased revenues across the AFME annual programme of events and member engagement initiatives.

The successful applicant will also be expected to oversee AFME’s event sponsorship relationship including acting as the lead sales person and as the coordinator on all aspects of interaction with commercial parties. This position requires strong sales experience and management expertise working with commercial partners at a tactical level in order to create and maintain sustainable relationships in the events sector.



Key Activities / Decision Areas

Sales and Relationship Management

  • Conduct research on prospective commercial partners and brief key individuals in the organisation
  • Create annual revenue and expense budgets
  • Identify, prioritize, and pitch to potential partners and clients
  • Negotiate all aspects of sales including the post sales process
  • Set benchmarks and track success against goals
  • Work closely with dedicated Event Project Manager to tailor packages to meet specific commercial partners needs


  • Sales & marketing campaigns - formulate and plan an annual marketing plan to promote the events portfolio
  • Work closely with the Head of Events to set sponsorship and delegate sales targets for the annual programme of events and agree on marketing plans to achieve those goals
  • Keep up to date on current association and financial services marketing practice to ensure AFME becomes a leader in its field with active membership

Business Development

  • Establish and develop commercial partnership opportunities
  • Drive ideas that will generate additional revenues
  • Provide  a vision in line with short, medium and long-term growth objectives
  • Report on sponsorship sales and prospect pipelines to all necessary stakeholders
  • Oversee and conduct delegate and partner surveys


  • Create a master events sponsorship contract template for each package level
  • Tailor commercial partnership packages for each prospect company
  • Create an end to end administration process that tracks events from pitch & sponsorship agreements through to payment and evaluation

Person Specification


  • Proven track record in a similar/complimentary sales environment, consistently achieving  sales to target with a minimum of five years experience
  • Experienced commercial negotiator managing key partnerships and relationships
  • Solid experience of creating and managing financial budgets
  • Energetic team player with a high level of enthusiasm
  • Highly driven with a desire to succeed, combined with personal impact
  • Ability to prioritise and work under pressure, with good time management


  • Experience of developing / enhancing sales and marketing infrastructure e.g. CRM systems
  • Ambition to grow and develop a sales function to a strategic level
  • Previous experience of working within financial services or an association background
  • Experience and understanding of data analysis and evaluation to meet business needs
