Domesday Book. Shakespeare’s will. Tweets from Downing Street. Records of war and of peace. These are part of the 11 million treasures held by The National Archives. Our collection is one of the largest and most diverse in the world and we are constantly striving to bring it to life for our researchers and audiences on site, online, and nationally. Join us as Director of Public Engagement to find new and innovative ways to inspire and engage audiences to experience our amazing collection.

About the role

The way people think about archives is already changing, with our blossoming events and exhibitions and award winning education and learning programmes. We have a new brand for the digital age and plans that reimagine our iconic brutalist building at Kew. You will drive this change further towards our vision of making The National Archives the home of our nation’s stories, and truly an archive for everyone.

You will lead and inspire a creative and ambitious team, with a directorate of around 100 people, and a breadth of specialists in functions including events and exhibitions, education and outreach, collections expertise and engagement, marketing and communications and customer insight. You will work to develop strong and meaningful relationships with external partners and stakeholders. You will be a member of The National Archives’ executive team and board.

This is a role that will see you standing alongside our Chief Executive and Keeper to lead our relationship with The National Archives Trust, while having overall responsibility for the visitor experience and our brand. This is your opportunity to be at the forefront of our ambitions and to be responsible for transforming the way we engage with the public.

About you

You will be a credible, visionary, imaginative and inspirational leader. You will possess extensive knowledge of the cultural and heritage sector, and a refreshing perspective on engaging audiences. With a track record of driving and developing diverse teams, you are respected by those who work with you, and are able to demonstrate evidence of building strong partnerships to the very highest levels.

We’re looking for someone who isn’t afraid to push boundaries. Who understands the complex opportunities and challenges we face as a digital archive seeking to engage more people with our online offerings. Someone who brims with creative, strategic ideas. You may even have a background in delivering exhibitions, public and learning programmes, and marketing campaigns. If that sounds like you, this is the opportunity you’ve been waiting for.

Join us here in beautiful Kew, just 10 minutes’ walk from the Overground and Underground stations, and you can expect an excellent range of benefits, including a generous remuneration package, civil service pension and flexible working. We also offer wellbeing resources (e.g. on site therapists) and have an on-site gym, restaurant, shop and staff bar.
