The opportunity

Hachette UK is growing organically and through acquisition and expanding into exciting new areas of business related to our core business of publishing.

We are looking for a Live Events Consultant to shape and establish our new Live Events business. This business will enable our community of incredible authors to bring their expertise to new and existing audiences through live events, organised and delivered to the same impeccable standards of our publishing output.

This opportunity is a six-month contract with the potential to be extended. The role will report directly to Nick Davies, Managing Director of John Murray Press, a division of Hachette UK.

At Hachette UK we are passionate advocates of flexible working and attracting people from diverse backgrounds and communities to our business. This role can be based at our London office, at any of our new regional offices in Edinburgh, Newcastle, Manchester, Sheffield or Bristol, or can be done primarily from home. There will be an expectation to work occasional evenings and weekends as required due to the nature of the business. This role can be done on a full-time or part-time basis.

Salary expectations are £40,000+ depending on the expertise and experience you bring.

What you’ll be doing

  • You will complete an audit of the current events output across Hachette and make strategic recommendations on how we can grow this area of the business.
  • You will establish a commercial programme of ‘Masterclasses’ for the general public drawing on our authors’ expertise across areas such as Creative Writing, Self Help, Science and Psychology, Cookery, Photography and Yoga.
  • You will establish a complimentary ‘Masterclass’ programme for corporate clients covering Leadership, Coaching, Creativity and Diversity & Inclusion, amongst other themes.
  • You will collaborate with and advise our specialist in-house marketing teams to help deliver branded Conferences and Training programmes across Autism, Mental Health and Social Work.
  • Hachette already co-produces dozens of high-profile author events – both in-person and online – in association with FANE Productions. You will feed into this strategy and also look at longer-term touring opportunities for our mainstream authors.

These are the main requirements of the role, but it is not an exhaustive list of duties.

About you

  • You will have at least two years’ experience in producing live event both on stage and online.
  • You will be a strategic thinker, who can evaluate new commercial opportunities and build a business case that attracts internal investment.
  • You will have a good range of contacts with venues, corporate clients and ticketing partners.
  • You will be able to demonstrate successful management of programmes and budgets.
  • And have a good understanding of the different financial models in the Live Events space.
  • You will have experience of audience engagement and in advertising and promoting the events.
  • You will be able to demonstrate a creative and collaborative spirit as you work with different publishing teams across the business.
  • You will also be able to work under your own initiative and self-direction.
  • You must have the ability to remain calm under pressure and deliver impeccable author care.
